HB Grandi’s vessels have landed around 15,000 tonnes of herring and mackerel so far this season. In previous years mackerel has primarily been a by-catch with herring but now mackerel accounts for some 60% of catches.

According to Ingimundur Ingimundarson, who manages HB Grandi’s pelagic vessels, Faxi RE, Ingunn AK and Lundey NS have caught approximately 9000 tonnes of mackerel and 6000 tonnes of herring this season. The focus has been increasingly on herring, but mackerel production has now also restarted at Vopnafjördur after a few days’ break. 3200 tonnes of mackerel and 2000 tonnes of herring products have been frozen at the Vopnafjördur factory so far.

Ingunn AK docked yesterday morning at Vopnafjördur with 500 tonnes of mostly herring on board as HB Grandi’s shore team was finishing landing 400 tonnes of mixed herring and mackerel. Faxi was expected on Friday afternoon with a further 400 tonnes, most of which is mackerel.
