Quality mackerel

‘We have to look back to the beginning of the 2011 and 2012 seasons to see some similarities. Most of the catch is fish over 400 grammes and it’s in fine condition. The meat quality shows that the fish are feeding well,’ said Róbert Axelsson, who has taken Venus as skipper for the last two trips. When we spoke to him, Venus had been on the fishing grounds for a few hours, and he commented that if they fish as well as in the previous trip, he did not expect to be at sea for much longer.

‘We had 550 tonnes in two short tows and it doesn’t take long to do well if we can hit a good mark,’ he said.

Deputy factory manager Thorgrímur Kjartansson at the factory in Vopnafjördur said while waiting for Faxi to dock that production has been fast and has gone well.

‘We are H&G processing the fish before freezing,’ he said and added that the fish look to be excellent quality and samples two days ago showed an average weight of 420 grammes.
Faxi RE was due to dock with a cargo of mackerel at Vopnafjördur last night, while Venus NS is still on fishing grounds south-east of the Westmann Islands. The company’s third pelagic vessel, Lundey NS, is due to sail tonight. There has been some good fishing on mackerel along the south and south-western coasts of Iceland.
