HB Grandi becomes GSSI funding partner
The announcement was made a few days ago that HB Grandi is one of five companies in the fisheries industry which have become funding partners for the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI).
GSSI’s aim is to increase transparency in seafood sustainability certification. This makes comparisons easier and is aimed at promoting trust, providing consumers with the information they need to be able to make informed choices when purchasing seafood products.
Along with HB Grandi, US company Mariner Seafood, Cabomar in Spain, Russian aquaculture company Norebo, Klaas Puul in Holland and Greenlandic fishing and processing group Royal Greenland have been accepted as GSSI funding partners.
The companies join 40 other funding partners of GSSI, including large retail chains and various seafood producers. All GSSI partners have committed to accept all GSSI recognised certification schemes as acceptable when sourcing certified seafood.
‘GSSI is a unique opportunity for us to collaborate with global stakeholders and drive change towards a more sustainable seafood industry,’ commented HB Grandi CEO Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson once the GSSI decision had been made public.
In November the Icelandic Responsible Fisheries certification programme was assessed and approved by GSSI. This confirms that IRF satisfies the criteria in respect of fisheries labelling and its procedures have been found to comply with international standards.
