Engey home tomorrow

HB Grandi’s new Engey is expected to dock for the first time in its home port of Reykjavík early tomorrow morning. This afternoon its position was 130 nautical miles SSE of Reykjanes and skipper Friðleifur Einarsson said he hopes to steam into Reykjavík harbour between 5 and 6 tomorrow morning.

‘Everything has gone perfectly. We caught one storm on the way but we had the wind astern of us,’ he said. This evening it is 15 days since Engey departed from the shipyard in Turkey where it was built.

‘I calculate the delivery trip as being between 3800 and 3900 nautical miles, and I’ve also heard that the shortest possible distance between Istanbul and Reykjavík under ideal conditions is 3724 nautical miles,’ he said, adding that he and the rest of the crew will be far from idle tomorrow in spite of their early arrival.

‘We’ll be going for bollard pull trials in Hvalfjörður and after that we’re going to Akranes where the catch handling deck will be fitted out. I understand that there are plans to open the ship for viewing once that has been done, which we reckon should be around the end of March or early in April,’ Friðleifur Einarsson said.
