Heavy capelin fishing off Snæfellsnes

There is some brisk fishing for capelin off Snæfellsnes right now, and an example of this heavy fishing is the 1600 to 1700 tonne catch that Venus had today, which is now on its way to Akranes where it will be processed for roe extraction and freezing.

‘We shot first thing in the morning and we had a decent amount for roe production in three shots,’ said skipper Guðlaugur Jónsson when we spoke to him earlier today when Venus was in a position north of Snæfellsnes.

He said that there is a large volume of capelin on the grounds, and he is sure that this amount is growing.

Í haven’t heard any mention of a western migration so far, but it ought to show up as in previous years. This season should last another ten days. I don’t believe it’ll be any shorter than that,‘ he said.
