No need to go west
HB Grandi’s fresher trawlers have not needed to go as far as the Westfjords fishing grounds since the end of the seamen’s strike. This is due to good fishing on the fleet’s home grounds to the south and west of Reykjanes.
‘We’re on the Selvogur Bank looking for saithe,’ said Eiríkur Jónsson, skipper of Sturlaugur H. Böðvarsson. ‘There has been good fishing for saithe for the last two days, but now it seems that the fish have made themselves scarce for the moment and today fishing has been slower. This has been large saithe we have been seeing here, and it may well be that they are more easily spooked when we’re trawling than the smaller fish are,’ he said when we spoke to him.
He commented that fishing has been excellent since the end of the strike, with some good catches on the Eldey Bank.
‘We decided to start here on the Selvogur Bank, but I hear from the trawler skippers on the Eldey Bank that there’s still good fishing there. There’s cod, golden redfish and saithe there, and there’s cod down here further south, which means we haven’t had to go all the way to the Westfjords for cod. The weather has also been kind – much better than what we are used to at this time of the year, and that makes a difference,’ Eiríkur Jónsson said.
