Improved transport links welcomed

The road leading from Iceland’s national highway to Vopnafjördur is now in the final stages of being resurfaced, replacing the former gravel surface with tarmac. The new road lies through the Vesturárdalur valley and represents a significant improvement for the inhabitants of Vopnafjördur and the countryside around it. Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, head of HB Grandi’s pelagic division, has welcomed this development that is a revolution for the district’s transport links.

HB Grandi is easily the largest employer in Vopnafjördur and the poor road conditions in the district have meant that on occasions trucks have been forced to take the longer north route past Langanes due to weight restrictions or difficult conditions, with the added costs of this incurred by the company.

‘That should all be behind us now. Right now I’m just thankful that we have run all the transport past the Bustadarfell slopes over the last few years with no accidents. It will make a huge difference to have a tarmac highway instead of the unmade road that we have been using up to now. But to my mind, the real difference lies in the safer traffic conditions and the reduced accident risk,’ Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson said.
