Fisheries minister in Nordurgardur

Fisheries and agriculture minister Sigurdur Ingi Jóhannsson last week visited HB Grandi’s Nordurgardur headquarters, accompanied by ministry director Kristján Skarphédinsson, office manager Jóhann Gudmundsson, deputy director and ministerial assistant Helga Særós Valgeirsdóttir.

They were greeted by Kristján Loftsson, chairman of the HB Grandi board and managing director Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson. The guests had lunch with HB Grandi staff, familiarised themselves with the work the company does and inspected the new cold store Isbjörninn.

According to Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, it was a pleasure to have the minister responsible for fisheries visit, and hopefully the opportunity to see HB Grandi’s factory and cold store will increase the minister’s enthusiasm for and understanding of the diverse activities of the Icelandic fisheries sector.

It seems that Sigurdur Ingi Jóhannsson was happy with his visit, commenting on his Facebook page that:

“A pleasant and interesting visit to HB Grandi. We were shown around the company and saw and the high-tech fish production that takes place there. It was particularly encouraging to see the development that has taken place and the Icelandic expertise behind the production technology. HB Grandi has twelve fishing vessels in its fleet, one of which will shortly return from a major refit and will be fitted with a processing deck supplied by an Icelandic company. We visited HB Grandi’s Reykjavík headquarters, but the company’s 700 staff are spread across locations in Reykjavík, Akranes and Vopnafjördur.”
