Saithe with cod catches of west coast

Fresher trawler Ásbjörn RE is now fishing off the westfjords and according to skipper Fridleifur Einarsson, they have been getting some good catches. They landed in Ísafjördur on Sunday and expect to finish the trip in Reykjavík on Thursday morning.

‘The fishing is pretty quiet at the moment but there’s nothing unusual about catch rates being changeable from day to day. It has been a good trip overall,’ he said when we spoke to him as they were fishing on the Thverál grounds along with several other trawlers.

Ásbjörn sailed from Reykjavík on Wednesday, so this is a longer trip than to the redfish areas off Reykjanes. But now they are looking for cod and Fridleifur Einarsson said that they have been getting some good amounts of saithe with the cod.

‘It’s all good quality fish. The cod average 2.50kg and the saithe are bigger at around 3kg,’ he said.
