600 tonnes of herring frozen at Vopnafjördur
According to production manager Magnús Róbertsson at HB Grandi’s Vopnafjördur factory, approximately 600 tonnes of herring products have been frozen since production began in mid-September.
Magnús Róbertsson says that the herring they have taken delivery of during September has been of excellent quality, but most recently there has been a greater variation in sizes.
‘We are starting to see more of the Icelandic summer spawning herring. We take samples regularly on board all of our vessels and there is no doubt over what is Atlanto-Scandian herring and what is Icelandic summer spawning herring,’ he says, adding that recent catches have been composed of a maximum of 20% Icelandic summer spawning herring.
HB Grandi’s vessels are now fishing along the Jan Mayen/ Herring Loophole line, an area that is roughly 30 hours steaming from Vopnafjördur. According to Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, head of HB Grandi’s pelagic division, Faxi RE was first there with a 460 tonne haul early this morning, followed by a 200 tonne shot by Lundey NS. Ingunn AK then still had its gear in the water.
