Squared away for capelin season

The herring season has come to a close for HB Grandi’s pelagic fleet and the capelin season is set to come next. The last day of production at Vopnafjördur was yesterday as the last of the 1000 tonnes of herring landed by Faxi RE at the weekend went through production. Before that, Lundey NS landed 1100 tonnes, and this was fish caught in Breidafjördur in the wake of a six day burst of bad weather that brought all fishing to a temporary halt.

According to HB Grandi CEO Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, around 7000 tonnes of Icelandic summer-spawning herring were landed even though the season did not get underway until October. He said that this year the whole catch was taken in Breidafjördur and the amount of herring on the grounds increased as the season progressed. The fish caught in the later trips were also larger. Production went well and there is considerable demand for herring products.

The capelin season is now ahead and Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson said that fishing will start as soon as the weather is right for it, although this is hardly likely to be until next week. But this gives the crews time to get the ships ready and take the capelin gear on board.
