Roe extraction started at Akranes today
Cutting of capelin and roe extraction started this morning at HB Grandi’s Akranes factory with 1000 tonnes of capelin that Lundey NS took in two shots in Faxa Bay yesterday.
‘The roe look very good. The roe content of the fish in this landing is around 23% and the roe maturity is 70 to 75%, so there’s nothing to wait for,’ said Gunnar Hermannsson, who has managed the capelin roe season at Akranes for the past few years. He commented that they should be able to start freezing roe tomorrow, as the roe need to be cleaned and drained before freezing.
Several pelagic vessels are fishing off Malarrif on the southern side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula and Faxi RE arrived there around midday today. The area is only a short steam from Akranes. Approximately a hundred staff are now working shifts in the capelin roe production while it lasts, and as usual, there is no way of telling how many days the short season will last, as this depends on quotas, weather and how soon the capelin spawn.
