Redfish improving and saithe looking more positive
‘The days are starting to get longer and the fishing on redfish is improving with some saithe with it. In general, catch rates are acceptable,’ said Friðleifur Einarsson, skipper of HB Grandi’s fresher trawler Ásbjörn RE which is now fishing on the Mountains off the Reykjanes peninsula, home grounds for the company’s fleet.
He said that they expect to stay on these grounds and are scheduled to land in Reykjavík on Monday morning.
‘There have been a few trawlers fishing around us recently on patches of ground west of the Eldey Bank. There look to be around five of them there now and catches are reported to be good,’ he said, adding that the group includes HB Grandi’s Helga María AK.
Last week black redfish was noticed at the Norðurgarður processing plant in Reykjavík among fish landed by Ottó N Thorláksson and Friðleifur Einarsson said that this colour variation in redfish is sometimes seen.
‘I have often seen black redfish and we sometime get several of these over a year’s fishing.. They aren’t common, but they’re far from unusual,’ he said.
There is currently perfect weather on the fishing grounds off the south and west of Iceland with a flat calm of the kind that is normally only seen on a perfect summer’s day.
