Everyone’s happy when the saithe show
Fresher trawler Sturlaugur H Böðvarsson docked in Reykjavík early this morning after a short trip, its first following the seamen’s strike. We spoke to skipper Eiríkur Jónsson last night and he said the catch came to around 100 tonnes.
Sturlaugur H Böðvarsson sailed on Sunday night, as soon as the result of the ballot on the new union agreements was clear, and according to Eiríkur Jónsson, they started fishing on redfish the Melsekkur grounds.
‘We did well right away, and then tried on the Eldey Bank where there is more mixed fishing. We had two good hauls of large saithe, proper ’season’ fish mixed with cod and redfish. Now we’re in the Skerja Deeps, east of the Búðagrunn shallows, and here we’re getting mainly saithe and cod. Everyone’s happy when the saithe show up. I reckon we’ve done well for ourselves, but we’ll keep going before we head for home,’ Eiríkur Jónsson said.
The original plan was for Sturlaugur H Böðvarsson to dock yesterday morning, but that plan was changed as Ásbjörn had been fishing extremely well up to Tuesday this week. The decision was taken to switch landing days, so that Ásbjörn was scheduled to be in port this morning.
