Opened after Easter closure
‘We can’t tell yet what the fishing is like as the area here was only opened at 10 o´clock this morning after the Easter spawning cod closure. We’ve taken one haul and it was a good one, mostly saithe with some cod and haddock,’ said Heimir Guðbjörnsson, skipper of HB Grandi’s fresher trawler Helga María, when we spoke to him. Helga María was then into its second tow on the Selvogur Bank.
He said that the trawler fleet has been fishing south or west of the closed area recently, apart from HB Grandi’s fresher fleet having spent their last trip on Westfjords grounds.
‘I was ashore for that trip, and it was the first one of the year further north off the Westfjords. They were mostly looking for cod and saithe on the Hali grounds and I know Helga María also did well on golden redfish in the Víkuráll Gully in the same trip,’ he said, commenting that he likes the look of the Marine Research Institute’s latest stocks report.
‘The state of most commercial stocks looks very good and we can hope that this means there’ll be an increase in quotas for the next quota year,’ Heimir Guðbjörnsson said.
