Catching blue whiting is patient work
HB Grandi’s pelagic vessel Víkingur is steaming to Vopnafjörður with 2150 tonnes of blue whiting on board and is expected to be alongside around midnight tonight.
Venus sailed from Vopnafjörður last night after a short stopover, after docking monday morning with 2400 tonnes on board.
According to Víkingur’s skipper, Albert Sveinsson, fishing for blue whiting in Faroese waters is still quiet.
‘We hauled 400 tonnes after a 19-20 hour tow, so you can see there’s no heavy fishing. This is patient work,’ he said, commenting that they were located north-east of the Faroe Islands for this trip.
‘The fish are mixed sizes, but it’s all good quality raw material. I expect we’ll manage a short trip to catcha few tonnes before the Seamen’s Day break next weekend. Unfortunately we have to steam quite far, we’re fishing in an area that’s a 30 hours steaming time from Vopnafjörður.’
