Contract signed to build one of the North Atlantic’s most sophisticated filleter
A contract has been signed between HB Grandi and the Astilleros Armon yard at Gijon in Spain for a new 81.30 metre, 17 metre beam factory freezer trawler. The contract price is €44,327,000 equivalent to IS4.9 billion. The new trawler is scheduled to be delivered in mid-2019, and it is expected to be among the largest and most sophisticated filleting factory trawlers operating in the North Atlantic.
HB Grandi CEO Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson signed the contract on the company’s behalf, alongside representatives of the yard based in the north-west of Spain. Construction is expected to commence in mid-September, so the new trawler will take two years to build.
According to HB Grandi project manager Rafn Haraldsson, the new trawler will be 5000gt, designed by Rolls-Royce which also owns Hydraulic Brattvaag. The design focuses on energy efficiency for both fishing and steaming and has a 4m diameter propeller. The main engine will be a 5400kW Bergen Diesel. The ship will have a sophisticated Rolls-Royce electric winch system. The high-capacity filleting and freezing factory is designed to have a production capacity of 100 tonnes per day. There will also be a fishmeal plant on board to process off-cuts from fillet production and this will have a 50 tonne per day capacity. Fishroom capacity will be for 1000 tonnes of frozen products, sorted onto pallets.
