Saithe fishing picks up

‘February was a difficult month for us, as it was for everyone due to the weather, but that has all changed and improved recently. There’s a feeling the season’s coming down here in the south and the saithe fishing is picking up,’ said Jóhannes Ellert Eiríksson, skipper of Ottó N. Thorlákssson, which has been fishing south-west and west of Reykjanes, the home grounds for the HB Grandi fleet. Ottó N. Thorláksson is due to dock in Reykjavík on Sunday morning.

‘We have no reason to be going north to the Westfjords grounds at this time of year, that’s the usual spring season cod influx and the saithe fishing is getting better, which is just as well. The golden redfish stock is strong, but there’s not much fishing on golden redfish right now,’ he said, and added that the new trawler Viðey will soon be ready. It is currently in Akranes being fitted out with catch handling facilities and an automated fishroom, as well as which the computer systems are being set up.

‘We’ll stay with Ottó until Viðey is ready,’ Jóhannes Ellert Eiríksson said.

According to Birkir Hrannar Hjálmarsson, manager of HB Grandi’s fresher trawler fleet, Viðey is scheduled to be ready for fishing next month.
