Fine fishing on blue whiting

‘Fishing has been excellent. We’ve just finished pumping 450 tonnes after a ten-hour tow,’ said Albert Sveinsson, skipper of HB Grandi’s pelagic vessel Víkingur, which is now fishing for blue whiting at the southern end of the Faroese EEZ.

Víkingur arrived on the fishing grounds on Sunday afternoon and when we spoke to Albert, they had taken three hauls. There were by then around 1300 tonnes on board, which is around half of the capacity of the tanks with the catch chilled in refrigerated sea water.

‘The blue whiting seems to be here earlier this year and last year we didn’t start until the 10th or 11th of April. This is fine, good-sized fish, and certainly top-quality raw material,’ he said, adding that as well as the Icelandic pelagic vessels, there are also Russian and Faroese vessels on the same grounds, along with one Norwegian.

‘There was a stiff east wind when we arrived here, and again yesterday, but today there’s fine weather. It looks like summer is just around the corner,’ Albert Sveinsson said.
