Top trawler bows out, Viðey takes over
HB Grandi’s trawler Ottó N. Thorláksson docked in Reykjavík on Sunday with a full fishroom. This was the veteran trawler’s last trip, and it is now replaced in the company’s fleet by Viðey.
Ottó N. Thorláksson has been a highly successful ship, built at the Stálvík yard in Garðabær in 1981. It has been skippered by Jóhannes Ellert Eiríksson since he took over 24 years ago. Ottó N. Thorláksson is currently on the slipway in Reykjavík where its new owners will take delivery this week.
Since its arrival from Turkey in December, Viðey has been in Akranes where staff from Skaginn 3X have been fitting the new automated fishroom, processing facilities on the catch handling deck and fine-tuning computer systems.
When we spoke to skipper Jóhannes Ellert Eiríksson, Viðey’s crew were taking fishing gear on board in Reykjavík and aiming for a shakedown trip before Seamen’s Day, before starting fishing after the holiday.
