Freshers increase cod catches
Sturlaugur H Bödvarsson docked at midnight on December 31st with 80 tonnes caught during a short trip to fishing grounds off the Westfjords. According to skipper Eiríkur Jónsson, they caught around 2300 tonnes of cod in 2013, which is a significant increase over the year before when HB Grandi’s fresher fleet concentrated mostly on redfish and saithe.
‘We have been fishing almost entirely on the Westfjords grounds since September as the company’s policy has been altered to place greater emphasis on cod in the fresher fleet than in the past. In previous years we normally had 800 to 1200 tonnes of cod for the year, which roughly covered by-catches taken when we were fishing for redfish and saithe,’ he said.
Top quality fish
Sturlaugur H Bödvarsson sailed at midnight on the 26th of December, into what Eiríkur Jónsson described as terrible weather for the first twenty-four hours.
‘It wasn’t until midnight on the 27th that the wind speed dropped to 20m/sec and we could shoot the gear away for the first haul. We started on the slope west of the Hali grounds and towed east, and by Saturday we were at the Thverál Gully. The fishing on cod was very god with some haddock with it. The last haul was taken off Snæfells Glacier and that was between four and five tonnes of saithe and redfish, all top quality fish,’ Eiríkur Jónsson said.
