Lundey in capelin search
HB Grandi’s pelagic vessel Lundey NS has sailed for a capelin search cruise being carried out in co-operation with the Marine Research Institute. According to Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, head of HB Grandi’s pelagic division, Lundey will start deep east of Iceland and is expected to spend several days searching for capelin.
‘We expect to fish our research quota over the next week in co-operation with the Marine Research Institute and other vessel operators – although we are hoping that we will be fishing as usual by the end of the week with a TAC for the season,’ Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson said.
Fisheries Minister Steingrímur J Sigfússon has authorised a 15,000 tonne research quota for the duration of the search that is allocated on a proportional basis to vessels and which is used partly at the discretion of the Marine Research Institute.
Lundey and Faxi RE both took part in capelin research at the beginning of the year. Both vessels are fitted with high-tech communications equipment that allows the Marine Research Institute to monitor the vessels’ fish finding equipment remotely in real time.
