Good progress on new cold store
Construction of HB Grandi’s new cold store at its Nordurgardur site in Reykjavík is going well and according to the company’s production manager Torfi Th. Thorsteinsson, work is on schedule and the expectation is that the cold store can be taken into use in May.
The contractors handling the new building are ÍAV and Kælismidjan Frost, and they report that they have a team of 40 working on the project. The 3.800 m2 building is more than weatherproof. Work is now in progress to erect the steel for the first floor, the outer cladding for the freezing and grading area, and to set up the freezing units.
HB Grandi’s new cold store is set to become at landmark at Nordurgardur, on the west side of the harbour entrance opposite the Harpa opera and conference complex, and last autumn the company’s directors decided to run a competition for a work of art to be placed alongside the new building. The judging panel’s unanimous decision was that Olga Bergmann, Ólöf Nordal, Rósa Gísladóttir and Thór Vigfússon should carry on to develop their proposals. The deadline to deliver these fully developed proposals runs out next Wednesday and the intention is to announce the winner before the 5th of May.
‘We are planning to invite staff and guests for coffee in the lobby of the cold store on the 2nd of June. That’s when we also celebrate Seamen’s Day and as usual, HB Grandi is one of the sponsors of the city’s Festival of the Sea. Our intention is display the four proposals for the art work, and if everything goes according to plan, to hold the formal opening of the cold store at the same time,’ Torfi Th Thorsteinsson said.
