New packing and grading station at Nordurgardur
Marel has delivered a sophisticated new packing and grading station to HB Grandi’s Nordurgardur factory that has been commissioned for handling fresh portions. This is an automatic system with two processing lines, allowing two different species to be graded and packed simultaneously. Each line has capacity for seven grades.
According to Birkir Hrannar Hjálmarsson, factory manager at the company’s Reykjavík location, the station that is intended primarily for grading and packing cod and saithe was taken into use last week and the initial results are encouraging.
‘We haven’t seen a great deal yet and it takes some time for the staff to adapt to new techniques, but it’s going in the right direction. The advantage that this new system offers is that we can react immediately to requests from customers for particular sized portions, and both weighing and grading are very precise,” Birkir Hrannar Hjálmarsson said, commenting that to start with the new equipment is being focused on grading and packing saithe portions. To date, fresh saithe portions going through the Nordurgardur factory have only been roughly graded, while frozen portions have gone through a more precise grading process.
The purchase of this grading and packing station is part of preparing the HB Grandi's Reykjavík activities for an expected increased throughput in its fresh production.
