Vopnafjördur producing frozen capelin
Production of frozen capelin started at HB Grandi’s Vopnafjördur factory on Friday after Ingunn AK landed the first capelin of the season. According to factory manager Magnús Róbertsson, frozen production had started a few days earlier during last year’s season on January 7th.
‘Frozen production is going well and the fish are mostly small grades so far. We grade out the larger fish and freeze the sizes we have markets for, otherwise the fish go for meal and oil production,’ he said and commented that there are now between 75 and 80 staff at the factory. This is a smaller workforce than when herring is being processed and he said that the herring season at the end of last year was patchy. This was due to poor fishing in Breidafjördur and frequent bad weather forcing the fleet off the fishing grounds.
When we spoke to Magnús Róbertsson, the factory was finishing production of fish landed by Faxi RE, and Lundey NS is already at the quayside waiting to land. Ingunn is at sea, now on fishing grounds that have already shifted east to an area north of Langanes, a considerable distance from the area where the first capelin of the season were caught last week.
