On schedule at Vopnafjördur
Excellent progress is being made on HB Grandi’s new fishmeal facility at Vopnafjördur and construction is on schedule, according to factory manager Sveinbjörn Sigmundsson. This week they expect to finish concreting the floor of the new meal store that is being built on the site of the company’s old fishmeal store.
‘The factory building has now been weatherproofed and practically all of the equipment has been placed. There are still a few pumps that need to be fitted. The electrical system are being installed at the moment and this is going ahead at full speed after the electricians had found it difficult to work while the factory equipment was being put in place,’ Sveinbjörn Sigmundsson said.
A team of 40, including the fishmeal plant staff, have been working on the construction at Vopnafjördur. As well as the new factory and the new meal store, work has also included maintenance on the old fishmeal plant building. According to the schedule, it should be possible to start up the new fishmeal factory at the end of January, but Sveinbjörn Sigmundsson said that it remains to be seen what raw material will be available then.
‘January has normally been a quiet month for us. Sometimes we have seen some herring at that time of year, as the capelin fishing doesn’t tend to get underway until we’re into February. Now nobody is sure what’s happening with the coming capelin season and we just have to hope that the research finds enough to justify the fishery. After the capelin season, normally we switch over to blue whiting,’ Sveinbjörn Sigmundsson said.
